Bushey Meads School

The boys and girls cloakrooms at Bushey Meads School were in desperate need of a full refurbishment and probably hadn't been touched for over a decade. The Facilities Manager had been given a brief by the Headteacher to get a 'snazzy new refurb' but it wasn't easy to know where to start!

The Brief

The layout was far from ideal – there were a number of walls which divided up the space, making it feel enclosed, even though the overall area was actually quite large.   Following a detailed site survey and a few different layout options, a solution was decided upon that opened up both changing rooms quite substantially.  However, the new layout didn’t involve too major reconfiguration of services such as plumbing which can be both costly and slow.  The refurbishment had to be done during the summer holidays so there was a fixed 6 week schedule on the project.

The scope of works for the cloakrooms had to meet a brief that was a complete facelift for both washrooms and yet didn’t compromise on durability.   To stay within the budget guidelines, the layout reconfiguration had to be very carefully planned as well.   The end result met all criteria with a very vibrant and stylish colour scheme in both cloakrooms that was co-ordinated across all fixtures and fittings.  A patterned laminate was used to create a stylish, adult feel to the space.

What we did

SGL cubicles and duct panelling ensure longevity to the project, and the one-piece vanity top prevents swelling from moisture as there are no joins for water to seep into.   The cloakroom benching is constructed from 25mm welded rigid frames with recycled plastic seating slats.  As well as being very environmentally friendly, this product is very dense and less vulnerable to chipping and splintering than solid wood.  It also has excellent water resistant properties which make it ideal for a cloakroom or washroom environment.

The ironmongery is designed specifically for the educational environment and is exceptionally durable.  The brackets bolt entirely through the panels and our locks are swivel latches as opposed to the more common but vulnerable sliding locks.  As a specialist educational furniture supplier, Pinnacle Furniture realise the importance of the detail so you can be confident in the quality of our products.  All the sanitaryware is selected with the educational environment in mind; the shower heads are vandal resistant and shaped so it is difficult to apply pressure to the head.  In the shower area the walls are covered in a plastic anti-bacterial material which is a preferred option to tiling as well as providing a neat seamless finish.
