Broxbourne School

Location: Broxbourne, Hertfordshire

The Brief

Broxbourne School is a new build eight-form entry school in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. It is part of a £100m mixed-use development project by Chase Homes, which includes an indoor sports hall, a 3G football pitch, a multi-use games area and a music centre.

Pinnacle worked with the contractor Mid-Group and architect Bond Bryan to provide FFE consultancy and to supply the furniture for the entire new build school and Sports Centre. The project was constructed using MMC methods and all furniture supplied was FSC® certified.

The school wanted the building and external areas to be designed to integrate seamlessly with the wider development of the building and to be a welcoming but very modern learning environment, a huge update to their previous out-of-date space.

What we did

Pinnacle were instructed to join the build at RIBA stage 3, this allowed our designers to comprehensively understand the schools FF&E design scope, specific design brief, and design expectations. Pinnacle were selected as the project had a very tight timeframe and our extensive specialist knowledge created a unique time-saving advantage to the design process.

As the building was constructed using a component modular build, coordination was key to this project to ensure installation fit alongside the rest of the works. Pinnacle’s project manager ensured critical milestones were met and that potential challenges were flagged early on; for example, some of the furniture had to be installed before the walls were in the correct design location.

A weekly report was communicated to the contractor and after install, our project manager helped staff move into the building and demonstrated how to use the new furniture.

A key design feature of the school was the 3-storey atrium, containing a dining area that was furnished using myriad café tables and feast benching. The staircase of the atrium was designed to have a bespoke seating area underneath and a bespoke trophy case integrated into the side of the staircase.

Specialist elements of the FF&E included Design Technology Equipment, Fume Cupboards, Sports Hall Equipment and Activity Studio Equipment. Science laboratories, DT and Art rooms were fitted with grey laminate and MFC worktops as well as capacity storage units. The Sports Hall fit out included match play basketball goals, a divisional curtain, and loose sports equipment. Legacy equipment was also installed through-out the school.
