Kent College enlisted the help of Pinnacle Furniture when the bespoke furniture solution for their flagship new library came in significantly over budget. Pinnacle’s design scheme was formulated by collaborating with the architect and college and comprised of a fitted storage system.
|Number of students||650|
On acceptance of the design, Kent College asked for our design solutions for furnishing the rest of the building, including 2 conference rooms, several offices, an IT suite, a multi-use study area and seating throughout.
The furniture specification for the library was very detailed; the floor-to-ceiling storage was built with a 15mm tolerance, the cupboard doors above the open shelving were push opening with no visible ironmongery, there was an ventilation grille built into the storage for extraction and all the library shelving was constructed with a metal frame inside the wooden carcass which gives additional loading capacity to the storage shelves as well as enabling the shelves to be interchangeable between units, height-adjustable and easily labelled.
What we did
The mobile units in the centre of the room had a hidden linking system to enable them to be fixed together when in rows but also easily separated if the room needed to be reconfigured. The stylish Pebble seating provides a place to perch and the Illustrate seating and tables allow for studying and group work.
The colour scheme was very specific as it was matching the laminate doors, panelling to the stairwell and coloured film to the exterior glass, so we used a laminate and fabric range that enabled a matching scheme to be installed through all the storage, reception counter, tables and seating.
The IT Suite was installed using a re-configurable benching system also in the same walnut laminate finish. The desking system had a length adjustable beam frame enabling the desks to exactly match the dimensions of the room while providing cable management all around the perimeter. The swivel IT chairs were supplied on castors.
