The Brief

The design and furniture need to reflect the age and tradition of both the building and the college while providing up-to-date facilities and learning. We worked closely with the architect to deliver a complex, bespoke furniture installation under very tight time constraints.

The Great Hall is a lovely room that was being fully refurbished under the programme. We built a shelving system that matched the wooden beams and panelling in the hall while bring in a touch of colour inside the bookcases with pink and blue acrylic and LED backlighting. The wooden storage specification was a wooden veneer outer finish with solid wood edging, 50mm carcass to carry the weight of books, and a metal frame interior which enables easy adjustment, labelling and interchange of the shelves between units.

What we did

Around the balcony of the Great Hall are a number of study benches, with a clever floating design to enable maximum student leg-room, marmoleum worktops, frameless frosted glass divider screens, and IT facilities to provide an excellent study facility in a inspirational setting.

Two classrooms were also furnished as part of the same programme of works; the furniture included marmoleum topped student tables, stacking wenge veneer classroom chairs and a fixed storage run that incorporated a teacher’s station. Due to the age and character of the building, the installation was particularly complex and involved ornate skirting and detailed worktop installation in the bays. The final result was extremely smart and the high-quality furniture looks stunning in the space and sympathetic with the building’s character and history.
