The Brief

Situated in the picturesque town of Guildford, University of Surrey’s Stag Hill Campus boasts beautiful grounds which is home to over 16,000 students. The University wanted to utilise the available floorspace in their current Lecture Theatre Concourse into a fresh and vibrant social learning zone for students to work or relax in.

The building is a busy space used as a thoroughfare for students moving across campus during term time and as an events arena in the holiday periods. So, it was important that we created a modern and durable design suitable for the nature of the space.

What we did

We redesigned the flooring, lighting and plastered and redecorated the walls to refresh and brighten the previously dark space. For a streamlined design, we installed banquette seating as they provide comfortable soft seating and privacy for individuals or small groups to work in. Loose tables were selected to offer flexible working areas for quick stay study or function as a casual meeting point.

A challenge we faced was timing the floor screeding and floor laying so that it did not interfere with public access for the holiday lettings on the site. However, we ensured that the concord redesign was carried out safely and mindfully to other occupants.

Overall, we are pleased to have redesigned an otherwise underutilised space into a smart and flexible working environment for the students. Pinnacle are proud of our first turnkey university scheme and are looking forward to progressing in the university sector.
