Woodcote High School

Location: Coulsdon, Surrey

The Brief

Flexible laboratory layouts were requested by the school to facilitate multiple room uses. Each laboratory had a unique colour scheme which was shown in the tray units and wall decorations in each laboratory. This helped to signify which topic was taught in each area.

The laboratories featured black Trespa lab tables along with solid wooden stools and science pedestals. The tables could be easily reconfigured around the pedestals to allow for a multitude of different uses. Fixed benching was fitted along the perimeter of the laboratories which included storage cupboards for equipment, tray storage for pupil’s work or books, and lab sinks with lids. Fixed ducted fume cupboards were supplied in labs that used hazardous chemicals for practical classes. The black Trespa lab tables were chosen to deter vandalism due to the dark nature and slight pattern of the Trespa tops. Scratches and marks appear to be part of the pattern and ink doesn’t show.

What we did

The preparation rooms featured tall tray units for maximum storage space and efficiency. Fixed ducted fume cupboards were also supplied here for preparation of hazardous chemicals and materials for use in theory lessons and practical sessions.

Other parts of the project include the IT rooms where we installed IT benching and Swivel IT chairs in grey to match the monochrome colour scheme of the area. Height adjustable tables were also supplied to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act and allow flexibility for those with disabilities.

The project was challenging due to the logistical obstacles caused by its phased nature and delivery schedule over a 9-month period. There was a strict deadline, and Pinnacle liaised closely with the main contractor to ensure that all was on schedule, and all unpredicted issues were dealt with promptly on site.
