What is SEND?
SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and defines the requirements of a child who has a difficulty or disability which makes learning more challenging for them than most children of the same age.
What does this mean?
Children with SEND may require extra help in lessons or require a different way of working. SEND can affect a child’s ability to socialise, reading and writing ability, concentration levels, ability to understand things or their physical ability. [1] This includes specific needs such as Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).
Pinnacle have worked on multiple SEND schools and understand the individual requirements of a school such as providing sensory classrooms, incorporating calming colours in furniture and considering spatial awareness in classroom layouts.
How Pinnacle use FFE Consultancy
As FFE Consultants, we are able to support a project with our advanced in-house visualisation capabilities that incorporate walkthroughs and static CGIS. These are adapted to suit the SEND environment and help the school understand the possibilities of their space.
We also allow for accurate budgets and costs at the initial project stages and, as a manufacturer, we have an accurate product cost base to work from ensuring clarity throughout the consultancy process.
Examples of SEND Schools
We have worked on multiple SEND schools, each with their own requirements:
Abbey School, Chester – an independent SEND day and residential school for children with autism
Flagship School, Hastings – due to open September 2021, a special school for students from year 3 to year 11 who have the capacity to reach age related expectation yet whose neuro-diverse profiles alongside additional social, emotional and mental health result in significant barriers to learning
John Watson School, Oxford – community special school for children with severe, complex, or profound learning difficulties
St Martins Special School, Gibraltar – the only SEND school in Gibraltar. The ICT/FFE integration had to be designed to meet the requirements of ASD, PMLD and SLD pupils
